Alliant Energy is based in Madison, Wisconsin and includes two utilities, Wisconsin Power and Light (WPL) and Interstate Power and Light (IPL). Alliant serves more than 1.4 million electric and gas customers across Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.
In October of 2008, Alliant successfully deployed eMeter’s EnergyIP™ meter data management (MDM) system as a foundational component of their Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) program. Through this program, Alliant Energy has deployed more than 500,000 smart meters in its service territory and expects to install more than 1.4 million meters by 2012.
EnergyIP is used to capture 15 and 60-minute usage data intervals sent by the smart meters and provides billing determinants to Alliant’s Customer Information System. In the future, EnergyIP will also provide outage and restoration event services to support Alliant Energy’s Outage Management System. Alliant will also benefit from the support for multiple organizations that EnergyIP provides and improved network planning.
The new metering technology is a key step in Alliant’s upgrading of its electric system to a complete Smart Grid. EnergyIP will be a central component in the Demand Response plans Alliant is making. This will encourage greater energy conservation by giving Alliant’s electric consumers the ability to better monitor and manage their electric use and cost in near real-time.
