PowerCentsDC Program Managed by eMeter and Overseen by Smart Meter Pilot Program, Inc. Showcases Demand Response Pricing Best Practices

San Mateo, CA – September 9, 2010 – In an effort to encourage further Smart Grid pilot deployments across the country, eMeter, a leader in Smart Grid management software, and representatives from the D.C. Public Service Commission (PSC) will present a final report on the PowerCentsDC Program in a press conference also attended by White House officials at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The report on the PowerCentsDC program, which tested demand response and dynamic pricing responses from Pepco customers in the District of Columbia, will be utilized by the White House as a best practices example for other states considering their own Smart Grid deployments. PowerCentsDC, which is managed by eMeter Strategic Consulting and overseen by Smart Meter Pilot Program, Inc. (SMPPI), allowed 90% of participating customers to save money over the course of the pilot.

“PowerCentsDC proves that the Smart Grid can deliver solid benefits to all consumers, regardless of income level,” said George Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. “The results of this pilot are helping our national efforts on the Smart Grid to learn from best practices.”

Today’s presentation followed a July meeting with members of the Executive Office of the President, the Department of Energy, and the National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST), during which time SMPPI Board members and consultants presented the initial results of PowerCentsDC. Chris King, Chief Regulatory Officer of Smart Grid management software provider eMeter and Rick Morgan, commissioner on the D.C. Public Service Commission (PSC), delivered the initial results of the PowerCentsDC pilot program. Federal officials were particularly struck by the unprecedented response from participating customers when given multiple pricing options. Members of the EoP asked that King and Morgan provide recommendations from the pilot’s implementation process for engaging consumers and effectively reducing power consumption.

“We’ve already seen the federal government take steps to promote demand response at a national level but many were not aware that this innovative program was happening in their own backyard,” said King. “PowerCentsDC not only reinforces results from many other Smart Grid pilot programs across the country, but presents new and compelling data on just how much consumers can save on their bills when given genuine insight and choice on their energy usage practices.”

PowerCentsDC – the first pilot in the electric utility industry to test an integrated Smart Grid combination of dynamic pricing, multi-faceted consumer engagement practices, and smart appliance control – included about 1,000 Pepco customers in the District of Columbia for two summers and one winter, from mid-2008 to late 2009. Participating residential customers were tested on hourly pricing, critical peak pricing, and critical peak rebates. This program was the first smart metering program in the country to test these three dynamic pricing methods at the same time. Customers also received monthly energy reports; in-home display of real-time pricing and month-to-date cost and usage data; and online access to detailed energy consumption and conservation information via eMeter’s consumer engagement web portal.

“The results from PowerCentsDC will help to inform the District’s policymakers as we move forward with smart grid technology,” said Morgan. “With Pepco’s ongoing deployment of advanced metering, our nation’s capital is poised to be among the first jurisdictions in the country to put smart meters to work helping consumers.”

All customer segments responded to the dynamic pricing model. Consumers participating in the PowerCentsDC program reduced summer peak demand by up to 50%, with the greatest reductions occurring when dynamic prices were combined with automated air conditioner control via smart thermostats. All three pricing groups – Critical Peak Pricing, Critical Peak Rebate, and Hourly Pricing – had statistically valid peak demand reductions. The Critical Peak Rebate pricing group was the most popular among customers, yet customers in the Critical Peak Pricing group exhibited the strongest response. Hourly pricing saved customers the most money, but was the least effective in reducing customers’ power consumption.

The analysis by Dr. Frank Wolak, Professor of Economics at Stanford University, determined that customers with low income not only reduced their peak usage by an unprecedented 30 percent, but also enrolled in the program at proportionally higher rates than other customers. Many program participants received lower bills as a result of dynamic pricing and preferred their pricing to Pepco’s Standard Offer Service (SOS) conventional rate structure. The results are generally consistent with other smart metering pilot programs and are expected to inform District officials with regard to Smart Grid policy moving forward.

“Due in part to the success of the PowerCentsDC Program, the District of Columbia Public Service has recently approved Pepco’s plans for a full deployment of smart meters throughout the district within 18 months,” said King. “Our hope is that with the strong support of the federal government, utilities across rest of the country will use this pilot as a model for achieving similar successes.”

With the assistance of federal ARPA funds, the Pepco is scheduled to deploy advanced meters for all customers in the District by the end of 2011, consistent with a PSC ruling. A dynamic pricing plan proposed by Pepco is also currently under consideration by the PSC.

GTM Research Recognizes eMeter’s MDM Platform Strength and Growing Product Portfolio

San Mateo, CA – September 2, 2010 – eMeter, a leading provider of Smart Grid management software, today announced it has been named a “Leader” in GTM Research’s “The Emergence of Meter Data Management (MDM): A Smart Grid Information Strategy” report. According to the report, eMeter is recognized as the overall leader of the fast-emerging MDM market, ahead of both Oracle and Itron. Referring to eMeter earning the number one position, the report cited “the strength of its overall MDM platform” and that the company is “rapidly building out a line of related software products.”

“We’re pleased that Greentech Media has recognized eMeter as having the strongest product in the market. This is further validation by yet another internationally-recognized analyst firm that eMeter has the leading Smart Grid information platform,” said Gary Bloom, CEO of eMeter. “ We look forward to working even more closely with our customers to ensure they and their consumers receive the benefits that can be gained from the Smart Grid.”

eMeter ranked in the top two positions in eight of the nine categories reported by GTM Research, including vendor criteria, meter data repository, meter data management platform, AMI management functions, customer-facing applications, energy management and utility operations. The report noted that eMeter’s EnergyIP “has clear advantages in the open market where multiple entities need flexible access to centralized system-wide meter data.” EnergyIP is the centerpiece of eMeter’s Smart Grid Management Software Suite that has the most large-scale, mass-market deployments in the industry. EnergyIP not only enables utilities like Westar Energy (profiled in the report) to rapidly deploy meter-to-cash, but also serves as a flexible platform upon which utilities can add other applications such as deployment planning, automated provisioning and asset tracking. Other key eMeter customers mentioned in the report include CenterPoint Energy and Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

Chet Geschickter, analyst-at-large at GTM Research and author of the report, said, “The MDM market continues to grow at a rapid pace, thanks to planned smart meter rollouts and enhanced product offerings from MDM vendors. eMeter stands out in the market with its best-of-breed technology approach and best practices for utilities to adopt as they deploy their unique Smart Grids to their customers.”

eMeter’s “Leadership” ranking in the GTM Research report follows the “Positive” rating the company earned in leading industry analyst firm Gartner’s “MarketScope for Meter Data Management Products” report earlier this year.

San Mateo, CA – July 1, 2010 – To demonstrate positive consumer engagement with the Smart Grid, eMeter Chief Regulatory Officer Chris King will brief members of the Executive Office of the President, the Department of Energy, and the National Science and Technology Council on the results of the PowerCents DC Program – the first pilot in the electric utility industry to test an integrated Smart Grid combination of dynamic pricing, multi-faceted consumer energy information feedback, and smart appliance control – on Thursday, July 1, 2010. Commissioner of the District of Columbia Public Service Commission (DC PSC) Rick Morgan and members of the Smart Meter Pilot Program, Inc.(SMPPI) board will also participate in the briefing; SMPPI’s members are the DC Consumer Utility Board, District of Columbia Public Service Commission (DC PSC), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1900, DC Office of the People’s Counsel, and Pepco, a unit of Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI).

“The PowerCents DC program clearly demonstrates that dynamic energy pricing and demand response will lead to significant changes in consumer behavior,” said King. “eMeter is thrilled that this administration is taking a closer look at successful demand response programs and what the federal government can do to drive energy efficiency through the Smart Grid.”

PowerCents DC, managed by eMeter Strategic Consulting and overseen by SMPPI, tested about 1,000 Pepco customers in the District of Columbia for two summers and one winter, from mid-2008 to late 2009. Participating residential customers were tested on hourly pricing, critical peak pricing, and critical peak rebates. To help them better understand and manage their energy use, participants received monthly energy reports; in-home display of real-time pricing and month-to-date cost and usage data; and online access to detailed energy consumption and conservation information via eMeter’s consumer engagement software solution, Energy Engage.

“This pilot shows that smart meters combined with smart prices and good energy information gives consumers meaningful energy saving opportunities,” said Rick Morgan, Commissioner of the DC PSC. “In the pilot, over 90% of the customers saved money – and over 90% said they would recommend it, with its features of dynamic prices, information, and smart meters, to their family and friends.”

Consumers participating in the PowerCents DC program reduced summer peak demand by up to 50%, with the greatest reductions occurring when dynamic prices were combined with automated air conditioner control via smart thermostats. All three pricing groups – Critical Peak Pricing, Critical Peak Rebate, and Hourly Pricing – had statistically valid peak demand reductions. The analysis by Dr. Frank Wolak, Professor of Economics at Stanford University, determined that low income customers not only reduced their peak usage as well, but also enrolled in the program at higher rates than other customers. Critical Peak Pricing and Critical Peak Rebate customers who saved money saved an average of $44 per year.

King is a nationally recognized authority on energy regulation and competitive energy markets. He is widely recruited by regulators and legislators to consult on technology issues in electric restructuring and grid management. Chris has testified before Congress and was instrumental in crafting the smart grid provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that paved the way for advanced metering initiatives in the US. In addition, Chris met with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and presented global Smart Grid benefits to delegations at the UN Business for Environment Summit in Seoul last April.

eMeter gives customers insight into energy use

San Mateo, CA – April 13, 2010 – eMeter, a leader in Smart Grid Management software, announced today that Westar Energy, Inc., the largest electrical energy supplier in Kansas, selected eMeter to provide the necessary Smart Grid software to commence its SmartStar program in Lawrence, KS. Designed to give customers better insight into electricity use and cost information, the SmartStar program became a reality with a $19 million grant from the Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Investment Grant program.

“Westar Energy is eager to work with an experienced and successful Smart Grid leader like eMeter to get it right,” said Bill Moore, Westar Energy president and chief executive officer. “Westar strongly believes that our customers should come first. For this reason, we are installing the Smart Grid software platform before meter deployment to deliver a reliable and scalable system that immediately provides customers with accurate information on their energy use.”

After a rigorous evaluation process, Westar Energy selected eMeter to provide the Smart Grid technologies that will engage Westar Energy’s customers and give them daily access into their electricity use and its costs. With eMeter’s Energy Engage customers can receive this information via the web, emails or even text alerts making it easy for them to adjust their energy use and focus on energy conservation. Additionally, the new technology will allow Westar Energy to better connect renewable energy sources into the grid and prepare the grid for future energy needs including the integration of electric vehicles.

“eMeter has the right products and experience to ensure successful Smart Grid deployments. We are excited about working with Westar Energy on a blueprint for achieving their business and customer goals,” said Gary Bloom, CEO at eMeter. “It’s clear that utilities are ready to put the DOE funding to work – now.”

Westar Energy is one of several utilities to receive funding from the DOE’s Smart Grid grant under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. eMeter transmission and distribution utility customer, CenterPoint Energy also received $200 million in DOE funding to accelerate the deployment of its advanced metering system and begin its Intelligent Grid project.

eMeter’s EnergyIP software platform will enable Westar Energy to better integrate operations and manage the electrical grid by detecting outages, power loss and reducing peak demand as well as provide more detailed monthly bills to its customers. eMeter’s EnergyIP is the centerpiece of eMeter’s Smart Grid Management Software Suite that has the most large scale, mass-market deployments in the industry. It not only enables utilities like Westar Energy to rapidly deploy meter-to-cash, but also serves as a flexible platform upon which Westar Energy can add other applications such as deployment planning, automated provisioning and asset tracking.

San Mateo, California — March 23, 2010 – eMeter, the global leader in Smart Grid Management software, today announced that former VERITAS CEO and Symantec President, Gary Bloom, will be joining as the company’s new chief executive officer. Bloom brings more than two decades of senior executive experience in enterprise software to eMeter. This newest addition to the eMeter executive team not only reinforces the strong momentum of the company, but also demonstrates the undeniable potential for taking the Smart Grid mainstream. Under Bloom’s leadership as CEO and Chairman, VERITAS grew from approximately $1.2 billion in revenue in 2000 to over $2.0 billion in 2004 and became the global leader in storage software.

“The utility industry is in the midst of a major technology transformation as they upgrade to the Smart Grid and eMeter is delivering best-in-class Smart Grid software solutions. I am excited to combine my enterprise software experience with eMeter’s market-leading product set, world-class partners like Siemens and IBM, and an impressive roster of customers across the world,” said Bloom.

Bloom will be replacing Cree Edwards who will continue on as eMeter Chairman of the Board. “Adding Gary’s expertise in building high-growth global software companies will give eMeter a distinct advantage as we position ourselves for the future,” said Cree Edwards, eMeter Chairman. “We are confident he’ll not only advance eMeter, but Gary will further establish what the Smart Grid industry has long been discussing – that Smart Grids are the future of the electric, gas, and water infrastructure worldwide.”

Most recently, Bloom was Vice Chairman and President of Symantec where he led the company’s line of business and corporate development organizations. Bloom joined Symantec through the company’s merger with VERITAS Software, where he was Chairman, President and CEO. Prior to VERITAS, Mr. Bloom was executive vice president at Oracle Corporation. During his 14-year career at Oracle, Bloom led Oracle’s database business, worldwide marketing, support, education, and alliance organizations, and was responsible for mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Bloom holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from California Polytechnic State University where he currently serves on the President’s Cabinet and is the Chairman of the Board of the Cal Poly Foundation. Mr. Bloom also serves on the Board of Directors of BMC Software and Taleo Corporation.
