What’s the Smart Grid?

Everyone is talking about it, but what is it? We’ve read every article and reviewed every report. Our conclusion is this Smart Grid definition:
The Smart Grid is an electricity transmission and distribution network with a parallel communications network and digital meters, sensors, and controllers that enables utilities to use renewable energy sources and reduce outages while empowering consumers with pricing choices, detailed information, and automated appliances to save money, energy, and carbon emissions.
Smart metering is a key element of the Smart Grid, automating the utility’s point of sale and providing the detailed energy usage and power quality data needed to achieve the full range of Smart Grid benefits.
